The Hitchhiker

April 17, 2012

When I was a teenager, my friend and I would occasionally play practical jokes on hitchhikers. One particular night a furious hitchhiker was so upset over our prank that he pulled out a gun and pointed it at us.  We drove off scared for our lives.  Later it was on the news that a lady was held gunpoint and robbed in her home around the same time and location.

I tell you that story because I have picked up many hitchhikers since those practical joke days.   I love meeting new people and having the opportunity to tell them about what I do for a living ... which usually leads to talking about my faith in Jesus Christ.

Just the other night, I was on my way to do a show.  I was on the phone with my mom asking her to pray for the evening.  I was not paying much attention to where I was going because I was listening to my GPS.  While on the phone, I noticed a hitchhiker.  I told my mom I need to get off phone because I was going to pick him up.  You could see the smile on the man's face that someone was kind enough to stop.

The man got in and quickly asked about me being an "Illusionist" because of it being printed on the side of my Hummer.  I told him I'm doing a show at a church nearby and already running late, but didn't mind taking him in the direction I was heading. About 1/4 mile down the road, my GPS said, "re-calculating."  I laughed out loud and told him I am going the wrong way for my show and would not be able to take him any longer and told him kindly that he needed to hop out of my truck. Though he was disapointed, we both had a good laugh about it being the shortest ride he ever had.

Have you ever been so excited about a relationship, job, situation just to later find out it was not meant to be and you were majorly disapointed?   Like the hitchhiker excited that I picked him up, just for moments later to ask him to get out because I was heading the wrong way.  Often times after these let downs, we cry out to God asking the question, "WHY?"   We are devastated.  Our joy is gone, excitement dissolved and we feel like the air was just sucked out of us.

First, let me tell you that when these things happen that God is NOT playing some kind of practical joke on you.  He would never get us excited just to disappoint us.  I want you to remember that you may have initially been excited in what "seemed" like God's best, but if you stayed with that person or in a situation, you would had continued to head in the wrong direction.

Often times our excitement comes from our own earthly desires.  W manipulate our mind set into thinking Jesus wants it for our lives.  We have such an amazing God that he has ways of getting our attention to inform us that we are heading the wrong direction and that we need to re-calculate.  At first you may be disappointed when told the "ride is over."  I want to encourage you to rest in peace knowing that if you kept going in that wrong direction, it could had lead to possible destruction.  May today remind you of how much God loves you.  He loves you enough to protect you.
